MANILA — Former Executive Secretary and long-time Batangas 1st District Representative Eduardo Ermita passed away on Saturday, October 18, at the age of 90, his family announced.

“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we, the Ermita family, announce the passing of our beloved father, General Eduardo Ramos Ermita (Retired), a dedicated public servant and our guiding light. He passed away peacefully today, October 18, 2025, at 8:00 a.m., surrounded by his loving family,” the family said in a social media post shared by Balayan Mayor Lisa Ermita, his daughter.

Born in Balayan, Batangas, on July 13, 1935, Ermita graduated from the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) in 1957 alongside fellow Batangueño and future AFP Chief of Staff Rene de Villa.

Ermita’s military career placed him at the heart of key moments in Philippine history. He served as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines during the turbulent years of coup attempts from 1986 to 1988, and as Undersecretary of National Defense during the December 1989 uprising. He also headed the Special Information Group during the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, helping shape the peaceful transition that restored democracy.

Under President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Ermita became one of the most trusted figures in Malacañang. He served as acting Defense Secretary in 2001, then as Executive Secretary from 2004 to 2010—a period marked by political challenges and reforms. As “Little President,” he was known for his steady leadership and calm presence amid crises, helping the administration navigate complex issues from national security to peace talks.

In politics, Ermita made history as the first representative of Batangas’ 1st District to serve three consecutive terms, from 1992 to 2001. He was succeeded by his daughter Eileen Ermita-Buhain, who continued the family’s legacy in public service.

Even after retiring from national politics, Ermita remained active in local affairs. In the 2016 elections, he served as Lakas-CMD provincial chairman in Batangas and Calabarzon regional chairman, later endorsing the Mar Roxas–Leni Robredo tandem.

Known as a “peacemaker” and a steady hand in both the military and government, Ermita was admired for his quiet strength and deep sense of duty. To many Batangueños, he was more than a leader—he was a mentor and a symbol of integrity in public service.

According to his family, his wake will be held at the Libingan ng mga Bayani on October 18 and 19, and at the Heritage Memorial Park in Taguig City from October 20 to 22. He will be laid to rest on October 23 at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.| – TheMetroTimes.ph
