MANILA, Philippines — Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has formally kicked off the competitive bidding process for 200 megawatts (MW) of baseload renewable energy, marking another step in the utility’s push to strengthen its clean energy portfolio and comply with the government’s Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS).
The Competitive Selection Process (CSP) follows the issuance of a Certificate of Conformity by the Department of Energy (DOE) on December 4, 2025, clearing the way for Meralco to procure additional renewable capacity under its latest DOE-approved Power Supply Procurement Plan.
Through its Bids and Awards Committee for Power Supply Agreements (PSAs), Meralco is inviting qualified power generation companies to participate in the bidding. Interested suppliers must submit their Expressions of Interest by January 6, 2026. A pre-bid conference is scheduled for January 15, while the deadline for bid submissions is set on February 16.
The CSP will result in a four-year Power Supply Agreement covering Meralco’s 200 MW baseload requirement, with delivery targeted to begin on January 26, subject to approval by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).
Meralco said the bidding underscores its commitment to expanding the share of renewable energy in its supply mix while ensuring transparency and competitiveness in its procurement process.
“This CSP is consistent with Meralco’s ongoing efforts to expand its supply portfolio sourced from renewable energy sources, while securing RPS compliance through a competitive and transparent bidding process,” said Meralco Senior Vice President and Head of Regulatory Management Atty. Jose Ronald V. Valles.
The move comes as Meralco continues to scale up its long-term sustainability strategy. The company has already secured contracts totaling 1,536 MW of renewable energy capacity from various suppliers—surpassing its original target of 1,500 MW.
With these additions, renewable energy is projected to account for about 22 percent of Meralco’s total supply portfolio by 2030, supporting the country’s broader transition to cleaner and more sustainable power generation.
As demand for reliable and environmentally responsible electricity continues to grow, Meralco’s latest CSP signals sustained momentum in the private sector’s role in advancing the Philippines’ clean energy goals.|
