Meralco, PNP bust illegal meter selling operations in Manila

Must read

MANILA, PHILIPPINES — The Manila Electric Company (Meralco), in close coordination with the Philippine National Police (PNP), successfully dismantled illegal meter selling operations in Sta. Cruz, Manila on Tuesday, January 13, as part of the intensified campaign against electricity pilferage.

The joint operation led to the recovery of 12 pieces of allegedly refurbished stolen meters that belong to Meralco. According to the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), the joint operation was the result of a series of surveillance activities conducted with Meralco’s support.

Authorities revealed that the modus operandi involved stealing electric meters, refurbishing, and reselling them online. Meralco will file charges against the establishment involved in the unlawful trade of stolen electric meters.

“We commend the swift action of the PNP in addressing this illegal activity. We assure our customers that Meralco remains committed to working closely with authorities to protect the integrity of electricity service and ensure public safety,” Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga said.

Meralco reiterated that stealing and reselling electric meters and other power distribution materials are illegal activities that violate Republic Act 7832, or the Anti-Electricity Pilferage Act, and are punishable with imprisonment and/or a fine ranging from P50,000 to P100,000.

Buyers or users of stolen meters and other electricity distribution materials meanwhile are also subject to legal penalties under Presidential Decree No. 1612 or the Anti-Fencing Law of 1972.

“We urge the public to immediately report to Meralco or authorities any suspicious activity related to Meralco facilities, such as electric meters and power cables. Rest assured that we will continue to work closely with the PNP to combat theft of electric distribution facilities and other unlawful practices that threaten public safety and the integrity of our electricity service,” Zaldarriaga added.

To report electricity service concerns, customers may reach Meralco through the MyMeralco app and through its official social media accounts such as Facebook (www.facebook.com/meralco) and X (@meralco). Customers may also text their concerns to 0920-9716211 or 0917-5516211 or contact the Meralco Hotline at 16211.|
