MANILA, Philippines — THE Manila Electric Company (Meralco) assured customers that its crews are working non-stop to safely restore power to areas ravaged by Super Typhoon Uwan (international name: Fung-Wong).
As of 10:00 a.m. today, the number of affected customers has dropped significantly to 197,000, from over 400,000 at midnight. Many of those still without power are in flooded areas, while most remaining outages are concentrated in Cavite, Bulacan, Quezon, and Metro Manila, with additional cases in Rizal, Laguna, and Batangas.
“We continue to actively monitor the weather situation in light of the strong winds and rains brought by the super typhoon,” said Joe R. Zaldarriaga, Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications. “We ask for our customers’ patience and understanding as we must always prioritize safety during restoration activities.”
Meralco emphasized that safety remains its top priority, both for its linemen and the public. The company reminded customers to observe key electrical safety precautions, particularly in flooded areas:
Keep the main power switch or circuit breaker turned off and avoid contact with electrical facilities when wet.
Unplug appliances and turn off permanently connected equipment. If possible, unscrew all light bulbs.
Clean and dry electrical panels and breakers using rubber gloves and rubber-soled shoes.
Have all wiring systems and appliances inspected by a licensed electrician before turning them back on.
Zaldarriaga also urged the public to stay informed and connected by keeping phones, radios, and other devices fully charged, and to verify news from official sources.
“In times like these, responsible sharing is crucial. Misinformation only fuels fear and confusion,” he said.
Customers can report power interruptions or related concerns through Meralco’s official Facebook page (www.facebook.com/meralco
), Twitter (@meralco), or the Meralco Hotline (16211). They may also text their concerns to 0920-9716211 or 0917-5516211.
With thousands of workers deployed on the ground, Meralco reaffirmed its commitment to restoring normalcy as swiftly and safely as possible—proving once again that even in the darkest storms, the light will always return.| – BNN Integrated News
