Meralco urges public to practice electrical safety amid New Year festivities

Must read

MANILA, PHILIPPINES — As New Year festivities approach, the Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has reminded the public anew to prioritize electrical safety to ensure a safe and accident-free celebration.

Meralco crews and personnel will remain on alert 24/7, even on New Year’s Day, to keep the lights on for its over 8 million customers and help ensure bright and worry-free celebration.

“We remind our customers to avoid lighting fireworks and firecrackers near electrical facilities to prevent untoward incidents. Rest assured that our crews and personnel are ready to provide any needed electrical service assistance as we welcome the New Year,” Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga said.

Meralco enjoins the public to observe the following electrical safety practices:

  • Refrain from lighting fireworks near electrical facilities. Fireworks near poles, power lines, and transformers can cause outages and accidents.
  • Keep party items clear of electrical facilities. Avoid using party poppers and balloons near power lines to prevent interruptions.
  • Have a fire extinguisher on standby. Firecrackers may ignite flammable materials, so preparedness is key.
  • Avoid “octopus connections” and overloading. Do not plug extension cords into one another; overloaded outlets are a common fire hazard.
  • Unplug Christmas lights and appliances when not in use. Remember to unplug Christmas lights and other appliances when not in use or before leaving the house.

While Meralco Business Centers will be closed from December 31 (New Year’s Eve) to January 1 (New Year’s Day), customers can report power outages and other concerns to Meralco through its official social media accounts on Facebook (www.facebook.com/meralco) and X formerly Twitter (@meralco). They may also text their concerns to 0920-9716211 or 0917-5516211 or contact the Meralco Hotline at 16211.
