MANILA, PHILIPPINES — The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) once again reminded the public of the dangers posed by the theft of power cables and other electrical facilities following a recent incident in Quezon City.
On January 4, at around 3:00 a.m., a 37-year-old man attempted to steal power cables, causing a temporary disruption of electricity service to nearly 8,000 customers. Power service was restored by 7:00 a.m. after Meralco crews quickly responded to repair the affected lines.
The suspect sustained flashover burns and fell from a tree following the attempted theft. He was immediately rushed to the hospital and is currently in critical condition.
“This incident underscores the grave dangers of stealing power cables and electrical facilities. Beyond the inconvenience caused by service interruptions, these acts pose life-threatening risks due to the high voltage of Meralco facilities. Any contact with energized facilities can lead to electric shock, severe injuries, or even death,” Meralco Senior Vice President and Head of Networks Froilan J. Savet said.
“Once again, we urge the public to cooperate in maintaining safe and reliable electricity service by reporting any suspicious activity involving Meralco facilities,” he added.
Meralco also emphasized that wire theft is a violation of Republic Act No. 7832 or the Anti Electricity Pilferage Act, which carries penalties of imprisonment and fines.
Customers can report electricity service concerns through the MyMeralco app and on official social media accounts on Facebook (www.facebook.com/meralco) and X (@meralco). They may also text their concerns to 0920-9716211 or 0917-5516211 or contact the Meralco Hotline at 16211.|
