THE University of the Philippines Diliman College of Science (UPD-CS) is stepping into a new era as molecular biologist Dr. Cynthia P. Saloma officially takes on the role of Dean. A trailblazer from the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (NIMBB) and co-founder of the Philippine Genome Center, Dr. Saloma brings a message that resonates with today’s generation: great science starts with great mentorship.
“Mentorship is the heartbeat of academic excellence,” she said during her affirmation speech on October 20. For her, students deserve more than lectures—they need guidance, inspiration, and the courage to explore the unknown. She promised to create a culture where students feel supported, empowered, and confident enough to lead and innovate.
Dr. Saloma believes that building the future means investing in people. “The Philippines is facing complex challenges—and we need world-class scientists who will rise to meet them,” she said. From climate change and food insecurity to global health crises, she emphasized science as a powerful tool for solutions.
Science Needs Support to Thrive
But innovation doesn’t happen without resources. Dr. Saloma was honest: even the brightest ideas won’t take off without proper funding, modern labs, and working equipment. “A promising student or researcher without support is potential left untapped,” she said.
To make sure science keeps moving forward, she plans to strengthen partnerships—with the UP administration, alumni, industries, government, and private institutions. These collaborations, she said, are more than financial support—they’re investments in the country’s future innovators.
Leading with Purpose
Dr. Saloma is the 8th Dean of UPD-CS and previously led the Philippine Genome Center from 2018 to 2023. She will work alongside the College Executive Board and program directors to oversee academics, research, student life, and campus facilities.
With mentorship, innovation, and collaboration as her pillars, Dr. Saloma aims to shape a UP College of Science that doesn’t just create scientists—but leaders who can change the world.| – BNN Integrated News / TheMetroTimes.ph
