Batangas City — Planning your next beach trip in Batangas? Authorities and resort owners are warning travelers to stay alert as online scammers are now using fake “blue tick” Facebook pages to fool tourists into paying for non-existent bookings.
In a joint press conference, resort operators and government agencies revealed how syndicates have become more sophisticated by creating Meta-verified pages that appear legitimate at first glance. These fake accounts usually offer unbelievably cheap promos, huge discounts, and “all-in” vacation packages with free meals and accommodations to attract victims.
The campaign was led by Playa Montana Resort together with the Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office (PTCAO), Provincial Information Office, and Provincial Legal Office.
According to tourism stakeholders, scammers often pressure customers into sending payments through online banking apps or e-wallets. To appear convincing, they even send fake IDs, permits, and registration documents.
“This doesn’t only hurt individual resorts—it also affects the image of Batangas as a tourist destination,” organizers said during the briefing.
The Provincial Government, backed by Vilma Santos-Recto, is now strengthening efforts against online fraud targeting tourists and local businesses.
Cybercrime experts from the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center also shared tips on how travelers can spot suspicious pages and report scams properly.
Meanwhile, the Department of Tourism and PTCAO reminded the public to book only through official contact numbers and verified pages of accredited resorts.
To help tourists avoid scams, PTCAO has posted an official list of registered and accredited tourism establishments on its Facebook page, complete with verified contact details and official social media links.
