Israeli Embassy Holds Dialogue with Siargao Stakeholders Amid Tourism Concerns

Must read

Embassy of Israel in the Philippines recently conducted an online dialogue with more than 70 business owners and stakeholders in Siargao following public discussions involving the behavior of some Israeli visitors on the island.

The virtual meeting was led by Israeli Ambassador Dana Kursh together with Consul Moti Cohen after a planned face-to-face gathering in General Luna was canceled due to coordination and protocol concerns.

Despite the cancellation, Ambassador Kursh stressed the importance of open communication with the local community.

“We are here because we care about Siargao, its people, its future, and its reputation as a world-class tourism and surfing destination,” Kursh said during the meeting.

The Ambassador also thanked General Luna Mayor Johnson Y. Sajulga, Vice Mayor Romina Rusillon-Sajulga, and local officials for their hospitality and cooperation during the Embassy delegation’s visit.

During the dialogue, participants raised concerns regarding tourism, community relations, and public behavior involving some foreign visitors. Embassy officials reiterated that Israeli citizens are expected to respect Philippine laws and local communities.

“We do not condone behavior that disrespects local laws or communities,” Ambassador Kursh emphasized.

At the same time, the Embassy noted that isolated incidents should not define the broader Israeli tourist community, adding that many Israeli travelers visit the Philippines to appreciate local culture, support businesses, and build positive relationships.

The Embassy also encouraged residents to report legitimate incidents through proper legal channels and local authorities to ensure due process and factual investigation.

Kursh likewise appealed for balanced discussions online, saying constructive dialogue and verified information are more helpful than speculation or hostility on social media.

The Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining open communication with stakeholders in Siargao while promoting a safe and respectful environment for both residents and tourists.|
