PHIVOLCS: No Cause for Alarm Following Taal Volcano Phreatomagmatic Eruption

Must read

THE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has assured the public that there is no cause for alarm following a phreatomagmatic eruption at Taal Volcano, which occurred at approximately 2:00 AM today.

According to Mr. Paolo Reniva, resident volcanologist at the PHIVOLCS Taal Volcano Observatory, no ashfall was reported in the vicinity of the Taal Caldera or surrounding lakeshore communities. He explained that a phreatomagmatic eruption is triggered by the interaction between magma and groundwater, which results in an explosive event.

PHIVOLCS reported that the eruption produced a volcanic plume approximately 2,500 meters high, which was carried northwest by prevailing winds. Despite the activity, Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 1, indicating an abnormal condition but with no imminent threat of a hazardous eruption.

The agency reiterated its advisory that entry into Taal Volcano Island is strictly prohibited, particularly in the Main Crater and along the Daang Kastila Fissures, due to persistent risks of sudden steam-driven explosions, ash emissions, and the release of toxic gases. Likewise, flying any aircraft in the vicinity of the volcano’s summit remains restricted.

PHIVOLCS emphasized that it is maintaining close and continuous monitoring of Taal Volcano’s activity and will issue timely updates should any significant changes be observed.| – BNN Integrated News
