Two Dead, One Hurt in Hit-and-Run Crash Involving Commuter Van in Tayabas City

Must read

TAYABAS CITY, Quezon — Two motorcycle passengers were killed while the rider was injured after a speeding commuter van slammed into them at an intersection here, authorities said.

A television report said the motorcycle was crossing the road when the van struck the trio, sending all three victims crashing onto the pavement. The two back riders died instantly from severe injuries, while the motorcycle driver survived and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Instead of stopping to assist the victims, the van driver reportedly fled the scene. However, Land Transportation Office (LTO) personnel who witnessed the collision immediately pursued the vehicle, leading to swift action against the driver.

The LTO Calabarzon regional office confirmed it has issued a show cause order (SCO) against both the driver and the registered owner of the commuter van. They have been directed to submit verified explanations as to why they should not be held administratively liable for the hit-and-run incident.

Authorities said the driver could face charges for reckless driving and possible involvement in colorum or unauthorized public transport operations.

As part of preventive measures, the LTO imposed a 90-day suspension on the driver’s license and placed the vehicle under alarm status to prevent its sale or transfer while the case remains under investigation.

LTO Calabarzon Regional Director Elmer Decena stressed that the agency will pursue full legal action against motorists who endanger lives and evade responsibility. He assured the public that both the driver and the vehicle owner will be held accountable in accordance with existing laws and regulations.
