LOS BAÑOS, LAGUNA — The Department of Science and Technology Provincial Science and Technology Office (PSTO) Laguna has conducted a specialized training on allergen management for Starkson Logistics and Processing Center Inc., aimed at strengthening food safety practices and consumer protection.
The training was organized in response to the company’s request and focused on preventing allergen cross-contact across the production chain—from raw material receiving to final distribution. It also highlighted the importance of regulatory compliance and operational improvements in food processing.
Leading the session was Dr. Rona Camille M. Lizardo-Agustin of the University of the Philippines Los Baños Institute of Food Science and Technology, who delivered an in-depth discussion on identifying and managing allergen risks within processing facilities.
Participants were guided through critical control points where contamination may occur, including storage, handling, and packaging stages. The training emphasized strict supplier control, validated sanitation procedures, and accurate product labeling as essential components of allergen management.
Dr. Lizardo-Agustin also underscored the importance of proper monitoring and documentation systems, noting that effective allergen control directly contributes to consumer trust and product integrity.
The session concluded with an interactive question-and-answer segment, allowing participants to identify specific areas for operational improvement within their facility.
DOST Laguna said the initiative forms part of its continuing efforts to support local industries in enhancing food safety standards and promoting public health through science-based interventions.
