Lipeños to wait another year as BarakoFest 2026 officially cancelled

LIPA CITY, Batangas — The highly anticipated BarakoFest 2026, originally slated to take over the Manila-Batangas Bypass Road in Barangay Maraouy on March 26 to 28, has been officially cancelled.

Organizers announced the decision via a statement released Friday, March 13, citing the destabilizing effects of ongoing global conflicts and the sharp rise in international oil prices as the primary reasons for the cancellation.

BarakoFest is a staple of Lipa City’s cultural calendar, celebrating the robust spirit of Batangas and its world-famous kapeng barako. However, the organizing committee noted that the current geopolitical climate has created real challenges that make a large-scale celebration feel misplaced.

At this time, we believe it is more important to stand in solidarity with our community and remain mindful of the broader impact of the situation,” the official announcement stated.

While the festival is a significant driver of local tourism and commerce, organizers emphasized that the economic pressure on families and businesses—exacerbated by rising fuel costs—weighed heavily on the decision to pause this year’s festivities.

The sudden cancellation leaves local concessionaires and sponsors in a period of transition. The Manila-Batangas Bypass Road, which usually transforms into a bustling hub of music, food, and automotive shows during the event, will remain quiet later this March.

To manage the fallout, the BarakoFest committee has established dedicated hotlines for those affected.

Despite the hiatus, the organizers reaffirmed their commitment to the province, promising that the festival will return “in better and more hopeful times.” For now, the strong spirit of the Barako will have to be celebrated more quietly in the homes and local cafes of Batangas.
