The Office of the President has officially directed all government agencies and instrumentalities to provide full support for the upcoming 2026 National Innovation Day (NID) celebration. Acting Executive Secretary Ralph Recto, acting by authority of the President, issued Memorandum Circular No. 115 to ensure the coordinated success of the nationwide observance scheduled for April 28 to 29. The circular also extends an invitation to local government units and the private sector to actively participate in the festivities.
While the Philippine Innovation Act, or Republic Act No. 11293, mandates the annual celebration of National Innovation Day every April 21, this year’s events carry a broader regional significance. The 2026 celebration is centered on the theme “AGOS ASEAN: Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Growth, Opportunity, and Sustainability in ASEAN.” The shift in focus aligns with the Philippines’ role as the Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for 2026, positioning the country as a leader in regional technological advancement.
The two-day summit aims to serve as a platform for recognizing outstanding innovators throughout the ASEAN region while fostering deeper collaboration between the government, industry leaders, academic institutions, and the startup ecosystem. By strengthening public support for innovation, the administration seeks to highlight how artificial intelligence can be utilized to improve public services, drive the transformation of local industries, and address pressing societal challenges.
Specific initiatives during the celebration will showcase AI-enabled solutions tailored for essential sectors, including food and agribusiness, health and well-being, and education. Furthermore, the event will explore innovation-driven approaches to climate change mitigation and adaptation, reflecting a commitment to sustainable development.
The National Innovation Council (NIC) will lead the planning and implementation of these activities. The council is set to coordinate closely with the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Department of Education, the Commission on Higher Education, and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority to ensure a comprehensive execution of the 2026 NID programs.| PIA
