MANILA — The Philippine Press Institute (PPI) and the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) have launched a five-day training program examining how artificial intelligence and digital technologies are reshaping journalism, content production and the media business.
The program, “Truth in the AI Age: Fact-checking, Creating Content, Using AI Tools and Monetizing Digital Assets,” runs from September 21 to 25, 2026 at Hotel Lucky Chinatown in Binondo, Manila.
The training brings together resource speakers from the Philippines and Europe to provide participants with practical approaches to four areas increasingly critical to modern media operations: fact-checking, content creation, AI tools and digital asset monetization.
Featured speakers include Sofia Calabrese of the European Partnership for Democracy, Rowena Paraan of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, Mara Cepeda of The Straits Times, and Emma Quaedvlieg, policy manager at EPD.
The program comes as media organizations face a rapidly changing digital environment in which generative AI can affect virtually every stage of newsroom operations—from research and production to audience engagement and content distribution.
AI tools can potentially improve productivity and allow smaller news organizations to develop content with limited resources. At the same time, the technology creates business and editorial challenges involving misinformation, fabricated content, verification and accountability.
The inclusion of digital asset monetization in the training also reflects the changing economics of media. As audiences increasingly consume news through digital platforms, media organizations are being pushed to explore new ways of sustaining online operations and turning digital content and assets into viable revenue streams.
For community and regional publications, this transition can be particularly significant. Digital platforms provide opportunities to reach audiences beyond traditional geographic markets, but maintaining audience trust remains essential to building sustainable media products.
The PPI-HSF initiative therefore combines technology and business discussions with the fundamentals of responsible journalism.
