Batangas strengthens role as renewable energy capital with ERC approval of Solar PH project

Must read

Batangas continues to cement its position as one of the country’s leading renewable energy hubs following the Energy Regulatory Commission’s (ERC) approval of Solar Philippines Tanauan Corp.’s (SPTANC) ₱1.417-billion dedicated transmission project.

In a recent decision, the ERC authorized SPTANC to develop and own point-to-point limited transmission facilities connecting its 50-megawatt solar power plant in Tanauan City, Batangas to the distribution system of Manila Electric Co. (Meralco). The project will link the facility to Meralco’s CIP 2 Substation via a 115-kilovolt bus-in connection, enabling the efficient dispatch of clean power to the Luzon grid.

The approval reinforces Batangas’ growing stature as a strategic center for renewable energy investments, hosting a mix of solar, natural gas, and emerging clean energy projects. With its proximity to Metro Manila, access to major transmission corridors, and supportive local infrastructure, the province has become a preferred location for power developers seeking to meet rising electricity demand while advancing the country’s energy transition.

The ERC said the dedicated facilities must be used exclusively for the Tanauan solar plant and developed in compliance with approved technical studies and the Philippine Distribution Code to ensure system reliability. To protect consumers, the commission ruled that any portion of the facilities that may later serve other users must be transferred to Meralco as a contribution in aid of construction.

The transmission facilities will allow SPTANC to fully deliver power under its existing power supply agreement with Meralco. The Tanauan solar plant holds a provisional authority to operate until February 2026.

Industry observers said the ruling highlights regulatory support for renewable energy development in Batangas, further strengthening investor confidence and reinforcing the province’s role in driving clean, reliable, and sustainable power generation for Luzon.|
