ORMOC CITY, Leyte — Student journalists from Batangas City emerged as key contributors to Region IV-A’s historic comeback, securing multiple individual and group titles at the National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) 2026 in Ormoc City. The city’s delegation showcased exceptional versatility, sweeping top honors in both English and Filipino categories to help propel CALABARZON back to its position as the overall national champion this Friday, April 17.
The city’s campaign was highlighted by a dominant performance in sports writing. Luis Keith L. Fernandez of Philippine Science High School – CALABARZON Campus clinched the championship in Secondary Sports Writing (English), while Lawrence C. Tana of Alangilan Senior High School mirrored the feat by securing the top spot in Secondary Sports Writing (Filipino). This rare double victory in the sports category solidified Batangas City’s reputation for producing elite campus writers on the national stage.
The excellence extended into elementary and secondary literacy categories as well. Princess Anja Dagasdas of Batangas City East Elementary School earned third place in Editorial Writing (English), and Ywayne Ram R. Tumambing of Julian A. Pastor Memorial Elementary School (JAPMES) secured third place in News Writing (Filipino). Furthermore, Mark Jacob P. Viernes of Philippine Science High School placed fourth in Secondary News Writing (English), while Ainah D. Pascual of Dumuclay Elementary School took fourth place in Elementary Science Writing (English).
The University of Batangas also placed fourth in Online Publishing (Filipino). This placement highlights the city’s successful adaptation to the evolving media landscape and its growing strength in digital journalism platforms. Local education officials and coaches praised the delegates, noting that these achievements are the result of rigorous training and the unwavering support of school administrators and mentors.
Their individual triumphs not only bring pride to the city but served as the backbone for CALABARZON’s successful mission to reclaim the “Home of the Champions” title in the very city where its legacy first began.|
