New Partnership to Boost Solar Adoption Among Philippine Manufacturers

Must read

PASIG CITY — MSpectrum Inc., the solar energy subsidiary of Manila Electric Company (Meralco), has partnered with two leading Japanese firms to accelerate the deployment of solar power systems for commercial and industrial facilities across the Philippines.

The joint venture, named MSpectrum Taiyo Inc., brings together MSpectrum, Tokyo Century Corporation (TC), and JFE Engineering Corporation (JFEE) to develop, own, and operate rooftop and ground-mounted solar projects, particularly for Japanese companies operating in the country.

The partnership is expected to expand access to renewable energy solutions as businesses seek to lower electricity costs, reduce carbon emissions, and meet sustainability targets.

Under the Joint Venture Agreement, MSpectrum will own a 60-percent stake in the new company, while Tokyo Century will hold 30 percent and JFE Engineering the remaining 10 percent.

The collaboration combines MSpectrum’s expertise in the Philippine solar market and Meralco’s experience in power distribution with Tokyo Century’s global financing capabilities and JFE Engineering’s extensive background in renewable energy and infrastructure development.

MSpectrum Chairman Ronnie L. Aperocho said the venture goes beyond corporate expansion and supports the country’s transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy.

“By expanding access to reliable solar solutions, we aim to help businesses better manage energy costs, reduce carbon emissions, and strengthen their long-term competitiveness,” Aperocho said.

The partnership builds on an existing relationship among the three companies that began in 2018 through Japan’s Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM), a program that promotes low-carbon technologies. Between 2019 and 2021, the partners successfully implemented several solar power purchase agreement (PPA) projects with support from the Japanese government.

Tokyo Century Senior Managing Executive Officer Toshio Kitamura noted that the Philippines’ growing economy has increased electricity demand, making renewable energy an increasingly attractive option for Japanese companies with operations in the country.

Meanwhile, JFE Engineering Managing Director Atsushi Kobayashi said the venture would help businesses pursue carbon neutrality through long-term solar power purchase agreements while supporting the country’s sustainability goals.

Meralco Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Manuel V. Pangilinan described the joint venture as an example of how strategic international partnerships can accelerate innovation and strengthen the country’s clean energy sector.

He said combining the expertise of the three companies would enable the delivery of scalable and efficient solar solutions that will help Philippine industries become more competitive while supporting the nation’s renewable energy agenda.

Industry observers see the partnership as another indication of growing foreign investor confidence in the Philippine renewable energy market, particularly as more manufacturers and industrial locators shift toward cleaner and more cost-efficient energy sources.| BNN
