PCG Probes Illegal Entry of Foreign Tourists into Taal Volcano Danger Zone

Must read

BATANGAS — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is investigating the illegal entry of four foreign tourists into the permanent danger zone of Taal Volcano after they were spotted near the crater in Barangay Alas-as, San Nicolas on February 8.

According to Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog, authorities received a report around 12:21 p.m. from the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, prompting immediate verification and sea-borne patrol operations by Coast Guard units from Laurel and San Nicolas.

The motorized banca used by the tourists was later located in Barangay Buso-Buso, Laurel. Initial investigation showed the group had rented the boat to enter the restricted area and take photos. The boat operator claimed they were unaware of the strict prohibition.

The PCG issued an Enforcement Inspection Apprehension Report against the boat owner for safety violations, including lack of registration and departure without Coast Guard clearance. Operations of the vessel were temporarily suspended.

Authorities are now coordinating with PHIVOLCS and the Taal Volcano Protected Landscape management for a joint investigation, reiterating that entry into Taal Volcano Island remains strictly prohibited due to risks of sudden eruptions, volcanic earthquakes, and toxic gases.| – TMT
