MANILA, Philippines — Senator Erwin Tulfo expressed expectations on Wednesday that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. will provide a comprehensive update on anti-corruption efforts, specifically regarding filed graft cases and government funds recovered through restitution, during his upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA).
Speaking to reporters during an ambush interview at the Senate, Tulfo shared indications that the current administration, actively working through the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Office of the Ombudsman, has begun pursuing legal proceedings against individuals allegedly involved in corrupt practices.
“Mga sinabi ng Pangulo about corruption (On the President’s statements about corruption), and I think they are doing something about it,” Tulfo remarked when asked about his expectations for the President’s upcoming address.
The lawmaker noted that while certain cases and ongoing restitution efforts have not yet been widely publicized, information circulating within the government indicates that specific respondents have already been directed to return illicit gains amounting to as much as PHP1 billion and PHP500 million.
Tulfo clarified, however, that he does not possess official or confirmed figures on the exact total amount recovered by the government so far. “Pero so far, ayon sa bali-balita, parang several billions na iyong kanilang nakukuha para sa restitution (But based on the information going around, it appears they have already obtained several billion pesos in restitution),” he stated.
According to the senator, an official report delivered during the SONA would provide much-needed clarity to the public regarding the exact number of cases filed, the specific monetary amounts being sought or already recovered, and the administration’s strategic next steps in its campaign against corruption.
In addition to his expectations for the presidential address, Tulfo assured the public that the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee will definitely proceed with its highly anticipated investigation into questionable and allegedly anomalous flood-control projects once the SONA concludes.
Addressing concerns about potential delays or hesitation, Tulfo emphasized that the panel remains committed to examining the issue. “Meron po talaga tayong flood control investigation. Hindi tayo umiiwas (We will definitely have a flood-control investigation. We are not avoiding it). We will conduct an inquiry. I promise you,” Tulfo said.
He further explained that the powerful committee must first complete its membership roster and formally designate a vice chairperson before it can officially convene and conduct legislative inquiries. The panel’s structural composition is expected to be finalized immediately after the SONA, ensuring that proper organization and procedural rules are established prior to the start of formal hearings.| (PNA)
